Description
The museum is located in the Old and Historic district of Abingdon, Virginia, a town founded two years after the Revolutionary War, in 1778. The main exhibits are housed on two floors of a 110 year old building which formerly housed the Abingdon Ambulance Service. The museum maintains exhibits of medical artifacts from the early nineteenth century up to the present day, and focuses on the history of medicine, especially as it relates to southwest Virginia We believe that a medical museum offers a unique opportunity for visitors to become more educated about health care issues. Therefore, one of the primary goals of the museum is improving health awareness through medical information and access to other resources. Through our exhibits and public events, we hope to provide the general public with a better understanding of medicine.
