Description

The California Historical Society holds one of the richest collections of primary and secondary materials in the state on the social, cultural, economic, and political development of California. Fine arts at CHS includes more than 5,000 works representing the history and art history of California from pre-Gold Rush days to the early decades of the twentieth century including: oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, lithographs, and decorative arts. Photography at CHS includes over half a million images in an array of formats documenting the history of California in both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Among the collections are daguerreotypes, albumen prints, stereo views and photographic albums.
