Description
From the 1880s to the 1950s, colorful paper labels were used by citrus growers to identify and advertise the wooden boxes of fruit they shipped throughout the nation. Thousands of labels were designed and used until the 1950s, when the wooden boxes began to be replaced by pre-printed cardboard cartons. The labels of primary interest to collectors today are those which were never attached to boxes. Label collecting extends as far back as the 1890s, but the 1970s brought new interest and prestige to this form of graphic art. By 1976 there were two label clubs on the West Coast: the Pacific Antique Label Society and the Tri-County Citrus Label Collectors. Due to overlapping interests and membership, these two clubs merged in January 1981 to form The Citrus Label Society.
