Description
Founded in 1961 by Forrest Campbell and Kenneth B. Butler, the Horatio Alger Society (H.A.S.) was incorporated at Mendota, Illinois in 1965 as a non-profit (501(c)(3)) organization. Originally a specialist organization for Alger collectors, the H.A.S. has evolved in its five decades of existence as collectors' interests have broadened. The H.A.S. now embraces collectors and enthusiasts of all juvenile literature, including boys' and girls' series books, pulps, and dime novels. For fifty years, the Horatio Alger Society has strived to further the philosophy of Horatio Alger, Jr. and to encourage the spirit of Strive & Succeed that for half a century guided Alger's undaunted heroes. Our members conduct research and provide scholarship on the life of Horatio Alger, Jr., his works and influence on the culture of America.
