Description

The first recognizable stone knife or scraper was probably about 500,000 BC. As it advanced from a "flake" technology it continued to proceed to non-metal (bone, stone) for utility or symbolic use. Even as early as 6,000+ BC metals such as copper and bronze and even later iron were used. Knives, such as swords, were used in Roman times as weapons. As we progressed, our tools became sophisticated and had specific purpose. Sharp tools were needed for food preparation, skinning hides and carving. Sharp edged hatches and axes were needed to create dwellings. These items migrated from Europe either by immigrants or import creating an American Cutlery industry. The New England area spurred the growth westward with Remington, Winchester, Russell, W. R. Case and Sons, Camillus, Schrade Cutlery, Queen, Ka-Bar, Union Cutlery Company, New York Knife Company and Utica Cutlery. These companies gave us the backbone for knife collecting. The custom knife maker with his imagination will carry the collector into the future.
