English Regency

Actually, English Regency should be included with the Late Georgian period because it was named for George IV, who reigned as regent for his ill uncle, George III. Palace styles were the vogue of the day, so luxury did abound.

Part of the Chinese influence appeared, along with some French and Egyptian styles. The pieces were functional and simple in design. Much was gilded and black lacquered, indicative of the Chinese thread running through the period. Proportion was given more consideration, and the scale was better suited to most people. It was not a style best suited to huge buildings only.

Mahogany, rosewood, and satinwood were favored. Inlay was used, some metal grillwork, and occasionally cane. Curves are rather bold, but simply so, and surfaces are flat with carvings including cornucopias, and floral designs.
