Cutaways by Jacob Feige
In Cutaways, Feige uses a distinctive technique to examine the ways people can be disconnected from their lives. Painting intimate scenes on canvases that have tape applied to selected areas, Feige then removes the tape, revealing “cutaways”, or empty areas of raw canvas which he fills with views into alternate spaces.
The result echoes a cinematic technique known as a cutaway; an edit which jumps from an intimate shot, such as a close-up of a face, to a broader view of the landscape. By doing this, Feige explores our tendency to "cutaway" from the present moment, sacrificing our experience of the immediate while striving for ideal conditions or concerning ourselves over future needs and wants.
