Wind From the East: Paintings by Michiyo Mizuuchi and Pottery by Yang-ja Lee

Michiyo Mizuuchi’s current paintings reflect simplicity and elegance, “wabi-sabi”, an idea that resonates with the Japanese Zen philosophy, and with color harmony representing the core elements Michiyo brings forth in her work. Michiyo’s acrylic abstracts are strongly influenced by Helen Corning of the Yellow Barn Studio and Marsha Staiger of the Art League in Alexandria, Virginia.

Yang-ja Lee’s pieces are strongly influenced by traditional Japanese pottery, and reflect her love of the Japanese tea culture (both everyday tea and ceremonial tea). Most of her pieces are either wood-fired or soda/gas-fired, which often adds subtle and unobstrusive beauty or “shibui” to her work. She belongs to Glen Echo Pottery.
