June 25 – September 18, 2016 - The exhibition provides new insight into the French master’s graphic work. Ranging in date from 1900 through 1950, the drawings reveal both Matisse’s process and the range of his creativity as a draughtsman. Many of the drawings from quick sketches to highly detailed images—have rarely or never-before been exhibited. Curated by contemporary artist Ellsworth Kelly (who selected not only the drawings but also the frame choice and placement of the work), Matisse Drawings is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue that features an interview with Kelly, Kelly’s original installation plan, and a special plates section reproducing all of the works in the exhibition.
