March 18, 2016 - August 28, 2016 - The exhibition features two site-specific installations by renowned contemporary artists, Jonathan Brilliant and Amanda McCavour, created for the Taubman Museum of Art. Using simple readymade materials in complex ways, each artist will address issues of impermanence and fragility in their work.
Jonathan Brilliant, a North Carolina based artist, creates intricate large scale woven sculptures out of coffee stick stirrers and other coffee related implements. Brilliant exploits the inherent strength of coffee stick stirrers by weaving and contorting them into “drawings in space.” Toronto-based artist Amanda McCavour draws with thread to stitch together immense embroidered installations. Using a sewing machine to create her intricately delicate installations, she sews lines into fabric that dissolves in water. With only the thread remaining, her installations appear as though they are on the verge of unraveling. Each artist will transform the inherent qualities of their materials in front of visitors in fascinating ways.
