Abstract Expressionism Definition

The term Abstract Expressionism refers to a painting movement in which artists usually applied paint rapidly and with force to the canvases in an attempt to show feelings and emotions. The artists who followed this painting style painted gesturally, non-geometrically, at times applying paint with large brushes, sometimes dripping or even throwing it onto canvas. The characteristics of some Abstract Expressionist art works are that it appears to be of accident and chance, but is actually highly planned. In Abstract Expressionism, the expressive method adopted in the painting was a lot considered as important as the painting itself. Abstract Expressionism originated in the 1940s, and became well known in the 1950s. There are several famous Abstract Expressionist Artists. Few of them are; Hans Hoffman (German-American, 1880-1966), Barnett Newman (American, 1905-1970), Philip Guston (American, 1913-1980).
