The term coffer in the context of architecture refers to square or rectangle shaped sunken panels in the ceiling. Coffer appear in the interior portions of domes also. The ceilings of Mir castle in Belarus and in the ceiling of the rotunda dome in the Pantheon, Rome are examples of coffer.
