In relation to art, genre refers to genre painting. It is a depiction of scenes from everyday life of common man engaged in ordinary activities. With the works of Jan Steen (1626-1679) and Jan Vermeer (1632-1675) the popularity of such painting rose in seventeenth century, especially in Holland.
