Heian refers to a period of the Japanese History which started from the late eighth century till the late twelfth century (794-1185). Heian literally means peace. Heian period was named after the capital city of Heian-kyo which is modern Kyoto. This period stands reputed for literature, art and poetry. Heian witnessed the wide use of writing systems based on phonetics called kana. Murasaki Shikibu, a renowned woman poet of the period wrote Genji monogatari ('The Tale of Genji') during Heian period. Yamato-e or Japanese-style pictures representing seasonal events and pastimes of courtiers were another feature of the period. Heian period also marks production of emakimono or narrative hand scrolls, byōbu or folding screens and fusuma or sliding doors.
