Manchu Definition
Manchu refers to the semi nomadic people who conquered China in 17th century. They established the Qing dynasty (1644 – 1911). The artists working under the Qing dynasty were grouped into three – the traditionalists, the individualists and the courtiers and professional artists. The traditionalists tried to revitalize painting by reinterpreting past models. The individuals pursued personal art with political messages. The third group worked in the courts. The Manchu paintings range from conservative landscape paintings to decorative pen and ink drawings. The five colored porcelain ware of Qing dynasty is a popular collectible.
