Regency Definition
The term regency, in the context of antiques refers to the British furniture during the reign of Prince George. The regency period is generally considered as the years between 1800 and 1837. Prince George reigned England as the regent of his father King George III from 1811 to 1820. The regency furniture was built in the Greek and Roman styles, but had geometric shapes that were simple. The monumental pieces had elaborate brass inlays and motifs of mythological creatures and laurel wreaths. The furniture built mostly in mahogany and rosewood had paw and claw and ball feet.
