Thangka Definition

Thangka, also known as Tanka, tangka is a Tibetian painting on silk or cotton appliqué. It illustrates Buddha, lamas, Buddhist teachings and scenes relating to Buddhism. The painting is painted or sewn on a picture board. Then, over it a fabric is covered and attached. This is usually covered with silk. The painting can be scrolled and preserved for a very long time. It is also known as scroll-painting. Its luster can be preserved if it is kept in a dry and moist free place.
