Albumen Definition
The world ‘albumen’ is used to refer to the transparent substance found around an egg yolk. In relation to antiques, the term ‘albumen’ is associated with a new technology in photography that was introduced in the 19th century. The technology used albumen in egg whites to produce Albumen print. Albumen joins the paper and photographic chemicals to form photographic positives. Using this technology photographs were printed on paper from negatives for the first time.
