Crackle Definition
Crackle is an art of decorating ceramics, pottery, or porcelain by intentionally or accidentally creating a network of fine craze lines or by causing a network of cracks to be produced on the surface of pottery or porcelain which gives it a crackle pattern glazing effect. It is a kind of traditional ceramic glazing technique associated with oriental and modern porcelain which involves layering of water-based and oil-based paints which gets dry at different interval of time. Such ceramics which are decorated with crackles are also known as crackleware porcelain or pottery. The term is also seen in the context of oil painting, to refer to the paint's surface that is broken by a web of small cracks. In addition, the term is used to refer to the crackling effect that is given to paintings to make the painting appear old and age lived.
