Coverlets Definition

A coverlet is a non-reversible and lightweight bedspread which is either woven or quilted. It is a decorative layer that is put over a bedspread. Coverlets may be made of linen or wool and were made during the 19th century. Earlier, coverlets were weaved on narrow looms. The weave structures of coverlet included designs like woven coverlets, summer and winter coverlets, double weave coverlets, overshot coverlets, and others. Coverlets made on special looms and which had pictorial patterns are called the jacquard coverlets. Woven coverlets had woven design in a linen or cotton background. Overshot weave coverlets had plain woven undyed cotton warp and weft. Summer-winter coverlets were reversible, and are dark on one side and light on the other. Double-cloth coverlets were double-woven, which had two sets of interconnected warps and wefts.
