Grotesque refers to a very ugly or comically distorted style of painting, sculpture or ornamentation that is followed from antiquity where the natural forms and distorted figures are interspersed in bizarre and/or fanciful combinations. The figures depicted may be of sphinxes, foliage and imaginary creatures.
