Insula was a multi-storied apartment block which accommodated majority of the urban citizen population of ancient Rome, including people of lower or middle class. Its ground floor was generally used for shops and businesses and artisan workshops. The insulae were constructed with minimal expenses and had frequent fires and collapses.
