Lanterns as collectibles include rail road lanterns and Halloween lanterns. The earliest lanterns are fixed globe lanterns used during Civil War and a few decades afterwards. They were used mainly on railroad lines. Tall-globe lanterns were used until World War I. Short-globe lanterns which were in use till 1960s succeeded tall-globe lanterns. Another category is the conductor’s lantern or presentation lanterns which had brass plating and ornamental lettering. Jack –o-lanterns were the famous Halloween lanterns of early 1900s.
