Pocket lighters were invented in 1823 and became popular by 20th century. The earliest lighters were manual using spark from a flint and later got improvised to semi-automatic and automatic. Some of the earlier lighters were made from glass and porcelain. Sterling silver lighters are also among popular collectibles.
