Lightfast is the quality of being resistant to light. In the context of painting, the term refers to how permanent a pigment is when exposed to light. American Standard Test Measure (ASTM), rates colors from one to five, with I or II being the most permanent. Water colors and pastels are considered to be most affected by light and hence museums usually displays paintings in such media in dim light.
