Snuffboxes Definition
Snuffboxes, as the term indicate refer to the boxes to keep snuff. With snuff’s popularity in Europe, the boxes to keep them dry also gained fame. The snuffboxes made for the rich included those with sides, tops and bottom in gold or silver. Some had hand painted miniature landscapes or portraits of the owner and others had rich enamel decorations. Snuffboxes were set with diamonds and other precious stones also. Silver was the most widely used semi precious metal in making snuffboxes.
