Social Realism refers to the art movement conveying messages of social and political settings. The paintings usually depicted the daily life of the working class and the poor. Though Social Realism can be traced back to European Realism of 19th century, the term as understood today evolved out of the Ash can movement of early 1900s. Ben Shahn, Reginald Marsh, Moses, Raphael Soyer, William Gropper and Isabel Bishop are considered to be members of this art movement. The emerging problems of immigration and urban poverty were raised by the artists of Social Realism. American Gothic (1930) by Grant Wood is a famous example.
