The word 'unity' literally means the condition of being one. It simply means oneness. In art, the meaning is derived when there is successful use of components and rules of design. It is termed as a total combination of all parts into a single complete cohesive wholeness. Mostly unity is achieved through a planned balancing of variety and harmony. Nonetheless, the balancing may not be in an equal proportion and the harmony or variety may outweigh each other. Harmony caters efforts in blending parts of picture together to structure as a whole. On the other hand, variety helps visual interest to the unified structure as a whole. If unity is attained without sufficient harmony and variety, it would result in monotony. Coherence is a synonym to the word unity.
