Underdrawing Definition
Underdrawing is a term used to refer to the drawing made on a painting surface before painting. The method was extensively used by artists in the 15th century. Underdrawing was widely used by artists such as Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden. The Annunciation (van Eyck, Washington) or the Arnolfini Portrait is one of the historic examples of underdrawing.
