The term as used in painting refers to the technique of creating an illusion of space and depth in a painting. In other words, it is the portrayal of atmospheric haze. As objects get closer to the horizon, they appear less detailed and paler.  This illusionary effect is achieved by using bluer or lighter shades for distant spaces.
