The baptistery, in Christian architecture, is a highly adorned structure surrounding the baptismal font, where baptisms are performed.   The splendor of the baptistery denotes the importance of Baptism in Christianity. Baptisteries were often contained in separate buildings, but are now incorporated into the cathedrals of most modern churches.
