Cel Definition
In the context of antiques, the term ‘cel’ is seen associated with animation art collectibles. Cels are drawings painted on celluloid to make cartoon animation. In order to make moving cartoon figures, hundreds of cels are made and photographed in a sequence. Animation art cels found from 1930 are considered to be the earliest in this category. Walt Disney’s celebrated career in animation started during this period. Animation art cels produced by Walt Disney Studios are well known collectibles even today. As opposed to modern animated cartoons produced using pictures generated from computers, these animated cel is original art.
