Champlev Definition
Champlev is an imprinted and hardened enamelwork seen onmetals. The metals surface is first engraved, grooved, or etched and after that it is filled with enamel. The metal is then fired and polished on cooling. This method has been used from ancient times. Enamel in different colors is used to fill the groves or designds on the metal surface. The produt that is obtained through this technique is also referred to as Champlev. The name is derived from the French word for "raised field." This enameling technique is used to decoratecaskets, plaques, and vessels.
