Empire Definition
In the context of antiques, the term 'Empire' refers to the new design style, especially relating to furniture, of the early 19th century. During the Empire period, American craftsmen used mainly mahogany painted in black for wood works. The craftsmen also used patriotic motifs, for example, eagles with spread wings; huge brass mountings; and flow legs in their work. Ornamental legs (carved like the paw of a lion) were also seen. Sofa table, sleigh bed, drawers, and dining table and chairs are examples of some furniture seen made following the Empire style.
The term is also seen used to refer to heavy architectural structures, including winged chimera and huge bronze mount. Architectural style during this period used big and open rooms.
