Lacquer refers to a coating which gives wood work hard and durable surface. Lacquer ware of Japan and China are popular among collectors. Lacquer wares were decorated using cinnabar which is crystallized mercuric sulphide, red in color. Hence the term cinnabar is used at times interchangeably for lacquer.
