Kylix Definition

Kylix refers to a shallow wine drinking cup in Greek and Roman antiquity that has a wide mouth. It has two horizontal handles that placed symmetrically and stands on a stem from a foot. It is sometimes referred as cylix. In its plural form, it is known as kylikes. The shallow interior base of the cup is called tondo and depicted paintings of Black or red figure styles that existing in 6th and 5th century B.C. The pictures were often designed to surprise or arouse the drinker’s excitement as the picture is slowly revealed to him as the wine drains.
