Ontbijt is a Dutch word which means a breakfast piece. In art, it denotes a specific genre of painting known as 'still life' paintings that comprised an arrangement of objects like flowers or kitchen utensils, placed out on a table. Paintings which were called Ontbijt were generally described as 'Stilleven' in Dutch during 16th century and it is from this word the term 'still life' paintings were derived.
