Polyptych Definition
Polyptych is a word derived from Greek which means many folds. Polyptych is a general term used to represent a painting which has different sections and panels. Art works which has many numbers of parts or is divided into two or more parts are called polyptych. The name of such artworks changes with the number of parts in it. The one with two parts is called diptych, with three is called triptych and likewise it goes on. Such paintings will have a central or a main panel surrounded or attached with other small panels in both sides to make it a big art. Painting apart from the central one may be thus called wings or side panel. These artworks were commonly found among the Renaissance painters and could be found in altarpieces in churches and cathedrals of those days.
