Porphyry Definition
The term porphyry is a Greek word which means purple. It is an igneous rock which consists of grained crystals which are large in size and are called phenocrysts. Porphyry is a non-geological term used to call this igneous rock. The stones have a combination colour of purple and red and are regarded as the hardest known during ancient times. Imperial porphyry is also an igneous rock which has deep purple colour.
