Portal Definition
Portal in architecture means a door or an opening or a gate constructed in large size. Portals were first seen in Gothic cathedrals and most of the Gothic cathedrals had three portals in the main entrance. It is an opening usually kept in the walls of a building for controlling the entry and exit to the building. Such portals may either be made simple or may be decorated with ornamentations. Ornamented portals were major attractions of churches during the Gothic period.
