Subtractive means to reduce. In the context of art it refers to color produced when light passes through a pigment. It also refers to the primary colors – cyan, yellow and magenta and also the technique of combining the color pigments. Subtractive sculpture is the oldest form of sculpture. It refers to carving or cutting away of unwanted parts of wood or stone to finalize the figure.
