Alla Prima Definition
Alla prima is a painting technique. It is also known as wet-on-wet. In this painting technique, the picture is completed mostly in one sitting by applying the wet paint on the previous layers of wet paint before it dries. The technique is applied mostly in oil paintings. In Italian, alla prima means at first attempt.
All prima technique was favoured by Baroque painters such as Diego Velázquez and Frans Hals. In the Rococo era, some notable works were done by artists like s Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Francesco Guardi, and Thomas Gainsborough.
