Primarily used in literary and artistic works, Bathos is an unpredicted change in the method or style of writing or performance so as to produce a nonsensical effect. That effect is generally a humorous one, and accordingly, bathos is often used purposefully for that reason. The term developed in English from the Greek word, meaning “depth.”
