Bitumen Definition
The term Bitumen is referred to a tarry substance which is oil based and had been used as oil color in paintings of ancient times. It is a semi solid form of petroleum and occurs naturally. It is used in paint mixtures, particularly to extend the presence of dull tones. Bitumen got to be extremely popular as paint in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. However, it is not in use as paint now because of its tendency to darken and was found to be unsound to use in oil painting.
