Body Art is a type of conceptual art in which the craftsman's body is the medium. This type of art is antecedent to performance art. Body Art frequently took the form of open or private performances. The most widely recognized manifestations of body art are tattooing body piercing, mehndi, branding and scarifications. Vito Acconci, Chris Burden, and Ana Mendieta are important body artists.
