Chine Coll Definition
Chine Coll or Chine-collé is a unique printing technique where the image is produced on a surface that glue to a heavier support in the process. The word originated from French which meant ‘glued or pasted.’ The specific process allows to print on delicate surfaces like Japanese paper, linen etc. The method allow the plate to make finer details to the print. It also permit a different background color to the image from that of the sheet. In ‘direct print’ method, a thin paper is kept on the inked plate which is then trimmed to a desired size. After applying paste to the think paper, the ensemble is kept on the damp backing sheet and run on a printing press. The ink gets transferred to the thin paper due to the pressure applied by the press and the thin paper glues to the backing paper in the process. A main advantage of this method is that the thin paper would be of the exact desired size.
