The word circumference originated from the Latin term "circumferential," which means ‘carrying around.’ Circumference is the linear distance around a closed circular object. It simply means the enclosing boundary of a circle or any other curved geometric shape. Circumference of a circle is related to the mathematical constant, π (pi).
