De Stijl Definition

De Stijl’ refers to a Dutch artistic movement which originated in 1917 in Amsterdam. This movement mainly comprised of artists and architects who promoted pure abstraction and simplicity. The principle was advocated by reducing the form to rectangle and other geometric shapes and reducing color to primary colors accompanied by black and white. Painters such as Piet Mondrian, Vilmos Huszár, and Bart van der Leck, and architects such as Gerrit Rietveld, Robert van’t Hoff, and J. J. P. Oud were the proactive members of the movement. Moreover, this artistic philosophy was also known as Neo Plasticism.
