The term diaphragm arch refers to a diagonal wall-bearing arch which creates a partial wall which separates a vault or a ceiling into numerous compartments. When a diaphragm arch is created beneath a wooden roof, it provides a partial firebreak. This type of arch was used during the second century in Roman Syria.
