Islamic Art Definition
Islamic Art refers to the visual arts made in the regions inhabited or reigned by the Islamic populations. Calligraphy has a prominent place among Islamic art. Islamic Art is usually classified based on the reigning dynasty at the time of producing the art. This classification begins with Umayyad and Abbasid dynasties and concludes with Safavids, Ottomans, and Mughals. Islamic art includes religious as well as the art of the rich and different cultures of Islamic societies. The early Islamic Art had influences of Roman, Early Christian art, and Byzantine styles. A main feature in Islamic Art was the use of geometrical floral or vegetal designs in a repeated way known as the arabesque. Arabesque denoted the transcendent, indivisible and infinite nature of God. The oriental carpet is another renowned piece of Islamic art. Pottery and tiling also finds a part in Islamic art.
